What happens when doctors only take cash

Article
January 26, 2017

In this article, Haley Sweetland Edwards writes about a new hospital model that is being adopted in some parts of the country where doctors only accept cash for procedures. One example of this type of model in practice is at the Surgery Center of Oklahoma, where cash prices for procedures are posted on their website.

The article describes the experience of one man who realized that his knee replacement would cost about half the price if he had it done at the Oklahoma Surgery Center versus his local hospital.

The problem here for many is that while paying cash upfront is the best way to save on medical costs, you’d need a large sum of money at your disposal to pay upfront. That’s why at Sidecar Health, our members are provided with a Visa payment card they can use to pay the doctor at the time of service so they don’t have to come up with a large sum ahead of time.
